Overview

A new peer-reviewed study in ACS ES&T Water evaluates a laboratory-scale VuOxi Plasma Oxidizer for the removal of PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) from water. PFAS compounds such as PFOS and PFOA are among the most persistent and difficult-to-treat contaminants in industrial and municipal water systems. Their presence in the environment is a rising concern and driving a desire for remediation.

The research team comprising experts from VuOxi, LUT University, 3M, and other partners reports quantitative removal performance, identifies key operational parameters, and introduces a diffusion-based process model to interpret experimental results.

Key parameters of the study

  • Plasma process: pulsed corona discharge (PCD) in a gas medium, with direct plasma contact to water droplets in the discharge zone.
  • Optimization parameters: gas composition, discharge polarity, temperature, droplet source, and pulse frequency were systematically varied to find optimal performance conditions..
  • Modeling: diffusion-based approach developed to interpret experimental data and guide system optimization.

Results

  • PFOS and PFOA removal energy efficiency in optimal conditions: measured at 20–24 kWh/m³.
  • The authors describe this efficiency as surpassing other AOP based methods in energy efficiency.

Significance for PFAS treatment

This publication provides independent, peer-reviewed data on the performance of VuOxi’s commercially available non-thermal plasma oxidation technology. The results position the VuOxi Plasma Oxidizer as a benchmark option for organizations evaluating advanced PFAS destruction methods in real-world water matrices.

About the VuOxi Plasma Oxidizer

The VuOxi Plasma Oxidizer is designed for the destruction of persistent organic contaminants, without the use of added chemicals. The technology applies non-thermal pulsed-plasma oxidation to generate reactive species that break down contaminant molecules.

The system evaluated in this study was an earlier marketed under the Roxia brand, now fully integrated into VuOxi’s product portfolio.
